BNTA EARLY WARNING LOST IN 12th May 2010 A Quantity of thirteen (13) gold sovereigns, including one proof, all dated 1820 of King George III have been lost since Friday 7th May in the London area en route to A H Baldwin, numismatists. They represent a full run of all the know varieties of date for 1820 plus some legend varieties, it is a distinctive group. They are all bar one in excellent collector’s condition and none of them could ever be considered bullion. When packed, they were all housed in the distinctive collectors white cardboard and cellophane “flips,” with descriptions written on each card in elegant Gothic style calligraphy in black fountain pen ink. It is still hoped that the courier’s ongoing investigation into this could result in the coins being found, but we thought it prudent to send out an early warning to members. At the moment these coins are mislaid or lost and not stolen. We hope that the courier company will of course recover them. However if per chance a BNTA member thinks they are being offered such coins, please contact Steve Hill immediately at Baldwin’s for very detailed descriptions of the condition of the coins and further diagnostics of the designs to positively identify them. Any information will be gratefully received to help recover this group. Steve Hill Director 0207 930 6879 A H Baldwin and Sons Ltd 11 Adelphi Terrace |

| 07 Apr 2010 | Stolen WW1 Medals | Open/Close |
In 1991 I had my Grandfathers 3 WW1 medals stolen from my home in Johannesburg, South Africa. A 14-15 Star, a Victory and a War Medal. I thought that was the last I would ever see of them. They were in the name of 2Lt G.E Haynes R.E. I knew little about my Grandfather, but 4 years ago I was in the UK and checked out his records in the PRO. I didn't read much into them and it was only by chance later that I did a search on the 11th East Lancashire Battalion on the net and I realised he was an original 'Accrington Pal', had joined up under a false name so he could basically 'do a runner' on his pregnant 1st wife. The other factor was that he had nothing to do with the Accrington area, being a Londoner. Anyhow, he was at the first day of the battle of the Somme and features throughout William Turners book, however never under his real name (Frank McVickers was his 'alias'). He was then commissioned (from Sergeant Signaler, 11th East Lancs (X Coy "Districts")) into the Royal Engineers as a 2Lt in 1917. He was discharged as a Lt in 1920). To turn out more info, I got in touch with people at museums in Accrington and was amazed to find out that only months before they had been contacted by a medal collector who 'had your grandfathers medals'. They even had a name and an email address and I contacted this gentleman from my (now) home in Sydney Australia and he had indeed had my medals for a short period of time having bought them on Ebay. However, he had sold them at a militaria fair somewhere in the north of England and had not recorded who they were sold to. So, so near but so far, they disappeared again after this fluky brush with them over 13 years later! It might be of interest to confirm the legend that surviving Accrington Pals wore the 14-15 Star in protest to the fact that Churchill had refused to grant it. The 14-15 Star I had had the name erased as each would have got one after the war privately and removed the original name. I also have a picture of my grandfather as Major G.E Haynes, C.O, A Coy, 7th Herts Home Guard (HTS7) in 1944 where he is clearly wearing the ribbon. The 11th East Lancs always insisted to a man that they had been in action in the 14-15 period, having been torpedoed on their way to France from Egypt on the last day of 1915! (just before they were nearly wiped out at the battle of Serre). They also insisted that they had served in a war zone being Egypt (threatened by the Turks) even though they never saw action. This apparently the other requirement for being awarded the Star. The Star was not present with the 2 other medals the collector had, mainly because it probably would have been discarded by someone who didn't realise the significance of the unnamed medal. Any Accrington Pals collection with 3 medals, the Star being unmarked is authentic therefore, not just someone trying it on. Anyhow, what I am trying to find out if any member can help by recalling if they ever came across these medals or have them in their possession. They were sold with the PRO copies marked "Frank McVickers alias George Edward Haynes" so they would really stand out. I would appreciate them back and even though they are technically stolen property would be prepared to pay either a reasonable market value or what the person paid for them. Can anyone please help or have any other suggestions where I might list this appeal? My email address is inpoint@optushome.com.au Thank you very much for your assistance Jeremy Havard |

Anthony Halse has reported that an old friend and customer of his was burgled during the last 3 weeks whilst he was away on holiday. His home was completely ransacked during the burglary. His collection consisted of a very large number of gold coins which included a complete date set 1817 to 2009 of sovereigns (all except 1819) plus around 46 duplicate dates. 14 Guineas, five pound gold coins (6), Two pounds (4), Isle of man 1973 set £5 down, gold 20 francs and 20 lires of France (over 100) Switzerland(38), Belgium(14), Italy and Sardinia (72) also 8 40 Lire, various gold coins of Denmark (14) Spain (5), South Africa(8), Russia (20) Tunisia (12) San Marino (32) Cheloslovakia (6) Austria and Hungary (over 100) Turkey (around 100) and many more. The collection also consisted of Threepences from 1670 to 1967, 6 double florins (two with the inverted date) florins (31, all pre 1888) 3 shilling bank tokens (6) and various duplicate gold coins. The collection was taken along with a good collection of around 20 antique gold pocket watches one watch in particular is very recognisable, it is 18 carat, English, the hallmark is London 1817, a full plate movement with a quarter repeater, white dial with roman numerals, key no. 6 made by Hawley, 75 the Strand London. Anthony Halse has a full list of the all items stolen but only paper copies. If anyone requires a copy he will willingly send them one. Should anyone have any information regarding the coins etc the contact tel no. is 01495 232383, which is Pontypool CID (Paul Graham) crime ref 1473/10. Two RAF logbooks, of Air Vice Marshal Leonard William George GILL, DSO, have gone missing in London and may have been stolen within the last 2 months. His widow Mrs. Gill is greatly distressed by this but has chosen not to make a police report at this stage. I have therefore offered to be a point of contact (as below) in case anyone has any information. Gill's service started in 1936 and it may be worth noting that Mrs. Gill still has the third (and final) logbook as well as the medal group. Michael Becker (FENAP) sent the following report today: Julian Leidman's car was broken into in early evening Sunday October 11 in Pine Brook, NJ. Julian believes that this might have been done with a tracking device on the car as he was returning to MD from Coinfest in Stamford, CT, where he may have been targeted. Taken was virtually the entire inventory including several significant coins. If you are offered any great coins from an unknown source, please contact Julian on his cell phone 301-785-5640 immediately as he has a pretty good feel for what was in the inventory, but does not have any complete lists yet. Many of the coins, however, might be listed at http://juliancoin.com/inventory.html <http://juliancoin.com/inventory.html> . For less urgent communications, Julian email address is jmlbc@comcast.net <mailto:jmlbc@comcast.net> . There were common gold coins, bullion, currency, etc. Also, a 1921 $20, foreign currency, etc. A $5,000 reward is being offered by two fellow coin dealers for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individuals responsible for this crime. Many thanks for your vigilance. |
